Westlake Modern Craftsman

Craftsman masterpiece with trellised portico and trussed library.

We designed a sweeping renovation and entry addition to this 1985 Postmodern home in Westlake, Ohio

Because of the existing timber construction and the wood siding on the home, we related it to more delicate and refined styles that relied on these elements in the turn of the last century, including the Arts and Crafts movement, the Art Nouveau movement, and the California Craftsman Style, and its Modern aesthetic heirs.  We included strong pergolas at the entries and as shading devices over windows, both in straight and angled configurations.  From these, we descended arts and crafts globe fixtures, shining upon tall patina bronze statues of homestead guardians.

The interior called for timber trusses with hammer beams, a fireplace with a strong, broad hearth and mantle, and elegant fixtures and furnishings.   Before our projects ever began, the roof of the central hall collapsed under a storm, and since the insurance was inadequate, the project was postponed indefinitely.
