Colonial Addition – Residence

New conservatory linking a brick home to a new mother-in-law suite.

A couple own this single-family home on a single-plotted quarter-acre lot in Fairview Park.  The house is a colonial revival style home built in 1940 with a brick veneer, sandstone lintels, white trim, and a front entry with Cambridge casing.    The home has three bedrooms and two baths.  It has received a major remodeling in 1957 and a dining room addition in the 1980s.  Many of the original interior finishes are holding up well.

The family has invited their mother-in-law to stay at the home in a new bedroom suite.  This room would extend from the main body of the house towards the west.    The new suite design includes a bedroom, bathroom with walk-in shower, kitchenette / dinette, and a lounge / living room.  It connects to the main body of the home with a walkway with a greenhouse / conservatory element extending from the office / den in the existing house.

In addition to the new suite, the owners requested that their existing single car garage be demolished from the site, and replaced with a new two-car garage that attaches to the new wing with a porticoed walk.
