An abundance of monumental architecture of great renown is for spiritual purpose. Recognizing this, I designed the midterm project of this course as a comparison of church precedents of ages past with local churches on the islands of New Providence and Paradise Island. Students were assigned a local church in pairs, and found their own precedent from Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, or Classical movements.
The churches explored include:
- The Cloisters (from 14th cent. Monastery in Montrejeau, France)
- St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cathedral
- St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church
- Trinity Methodist Church
- Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation
- Christ Church Cathedral
- St. Andrew’s Kirk
