This project entailed the design of a series of new cabins located directly on the Riverview Pines resort grounds in Estes Park, Colorado, a short distance from Rocky Mountain National Park. The cabins are based on a simple, rectangular plan profile, with alterations made for improved entry, circulation, functional and aesthetic considerations. The existing architecture on the site includes three specific types. Existing cabins have a chalet look, with exposed trusses and decorative corbels. The single-unit cabins are of log-type construction, with outriggers and a raised deck. The owner’s home and office are both rustic and refined, with a stone base, board and batten siding and crisp carpentry. The owner has expressed an interest in making the new cabins of a decidedly higher construction quality and finish quality then the existing cabins.
One architectural response is to design the new cabins identically. Another would be to design each one with certain distinctions in style, that give each cabin a distinct impression. Alternates for style could include roof shapes, dormers, porticoes, and façade materials. We gave each response a specific price point in this proposal. The designs were never built, and we retained the copyright for future projects.
