Colonial Revival Addition

Colonial revival home with a new kitchen and pyramidal entry canopy.

This Eclectic Colonial Revival style home was constructed in 1920 in Lakewood, Ohio.  The home’s primary massing is a side-facing gambrel, with a tall peaked front entry reminiscent of the Gothic Revival, another popular style of that epoch. The home was a boarding house during the 1940s and during that time, and perhaps thereafter, it received a number of minor alterations and an addition. The 3-bedroom, 1-bath home has met the family’s needs for numerous years, but the owners decided to substantially alter it to better suit their lifestyle.

The overarching design approach for this project is one of separate chambers, not the open plan advocated by many twentieth century architects. The Owners appreciate the idea of a separate Kitchen, Dining Room, and Living Room. And they certainly would appreciate some additional functional appurtenances – such as a new bathroom on the first level, a mud room, a pantry, and a vast array of additional cabinetry.

Most houses in the neighborhood have adequate porches, at least wide and broad enough to accommodate a couple, if not a family. As such, the Owners requested a similar portico expansion at their front entry. The design here indicates a hipped roof cover with copper, and an adjacent trellis structure for some shading at the west elevation.
