Island Mixed Use

Beachfront home and tourist lodge in Inaugua, an island of The Bahamas.

The Valley View Village Church elders had outgrown their current facility, and desired an immediate expansion in order to accommodate storage needs. The primary storage is for elements of the church’s outreach, which is a Live Nativity play, set outdoors near the church each December.

The church itself was built in a agglomeration of forms in a number of eclectic styles. The first building was built in 1941, with an expansion occurring in the 1970s and a remodel in 1989. The complex consists of three gables framed into each other. The most prominent of these is a central gable mass with the ridge running north-south, and includes an entry and a school. Another school element frames into the central gable mass from the west. The widest element of the three is the sanctuary proper, which frames into the central gable from the west. The addition is slated for the upper northwest corner, extending further north towards the back yard.

We produced three-dimensional drawings that described the existing church elements from our field verifications. We designed an addition to serve the storage expansion, and detailed this addition for purposes of construction and obtaining permits. The project is on hold, pending funding.
