A couple with children established their homestead here in rural Williamson County, Texas, roughly an hour east of Austin. The territory is diverse, containing a rocky plateau, low rolling hills, low-lying prairie, and rich fertile farmland. Upon arrival, the family moved into an existing folk Victorian, and soon thereafter substantially remodeled it. Looking towards a future complex of buildings, and an eventual bed-and-breakfast, the couple built a games-room and media house and adjacent pool and hot tub.
The style of the house was Texas Hill Country, with natural materials of stone, stucco, and dark-stained timber, and a standing steam steel roof. Steep gables and low-pitched sheds abound. The clients requested that any new buildings on the property be designed in a similar rustic style. The home design went through roughly five distinct phases before a final confirmation.
These are as follows:
- A village concept around the existing pool, anchored with a tower
- A curving wall defining the border of two masses, one public & one private
- A simple renaissance block with proportions based on Palladio
- A home with an extended bedroom wing and a “widow’s walk.”
- Final – the current home without the bedroom wing, and with an observation deck.
